Fermipalooza!

ASTR 596/496 NPA Fermilab Tour 2009

The NPA trip to Fermilab is fast approaching!

Date: Saturday October 10
Departure: 8:00am, Astronomy Builiding loading dock (back door)
Return: about 7pm (before dinner), Astronomy Building
Admission Fee: none
Cameras allowed? Yes! Encouraged, even.

We will meet at 8:00am behind the Astronomy building, and then drive up in a van; this barbaric, uncivilized departure time is forced upon us because of the ~3 hour transit time. When we arrive we will be met by Prof. Kevin Pitts. Kevin is graciously taking some of his weekend time to give one of his legendary insider tours, starting with a brief orientation. Then we will have lunch at the world-famous Fermilab cafeteria, which is no threat to Charle Trotter's, but then is also not nearly as pricey. The cafeteria offers sandwiches, pizza, burgers, and some hot dishes as well. You should either bring money for this or bring your lunch. After this, we will tour several experiments, and see some of the most famous Fermilab citizens.

The accelerator currently has beam and is running and taking data. This means that there are some places we cannot go (e.g., in the tunnel or near the detectors) but on the other hand we will watch the lab in action--perhaps Supersymmetry will be discovered before our eyes! Also, there are other experiments which are offline at the moment which we can visit up close.
