Assignments
Participation
Both active participation and listening are fundamental requirements of the course. It will be very important that you participate in class discussions consistently. It is also very important, whenever possible, to bring to class discussion any printed or online materials that we are using.
Quizzes
Each unit will include one take-home quiz that will include short answer and mini-essay questions based on the material covered in that unit and any major concepts introduced in the course. All quizzes will be open book and open note, but they must be completed independently (without consultation or collaboration).
ONLINE Discussions
The course will also include 4 online discussion forums, each of which focuses on a particular archetype or image of Latinas. You may participate in these at throughout the semester. Each post is worth up to 20 points. In order to receive credit, you must address any relevant previous posts on the same topic.
Research Project
You will be required to complete an extended research project that you will work on throughout the semester. For your research project, you will select an extended medium/format of representation (film, television series, or novel) and examine the representation of Latina characters in that body of work. At the end of each unit, you will be invited to discuss your chosen material in light of the readings and concepts introduced in that unit. Following that discussion, you will turn in a one-page analysis based on that discussion (25 points each). Your final assignment will be an extended analysis (7-8 pages) of the development of Latina characters in your work, incorporating both assigned texts and outside sources.
