Animal Rights vs. Animal Welfare INTRODUCTION STUDENT IN DEPARTMENT CLUBS GALLERY PODCAST OTHER LINKS

INTRODUCTION

My project is about Animal Right vs. Animal Welfare. Most people would think the definitions of these two terms are similar, but they are quite different. According to the world’s largest education resource website “ThoughtCo.,” animal right means that human does not have right to use animals for their own purposes while animal welfare means that animal can be used for testing, eating or serving for other purposes as long as they are treated humanely.
Currently, UIUC animal department is focusing more on animal welfare. Research includes improving animals life quality, sustainability development of animals, enhancing well-being of human and animals, etc. Clubs, such as Companion Animal Club, are also helping to improve animal welfare on campus.
In my opinion, animal right is another important aspect, but much less activities on campus involve in this area. I truly hope new clubs can be established and fight for animal right in the future.

Further thought

Even though animal right and animal welfare are different that one is totally fight against killing animal while the other one is to treat animal gently, I think they still have a connection. Animal right is a further step of animal welfare, and I think that we are in between right now. Like our vegetarian group on campus, which they do not against people who eat meats although they do not eat meats themselves. I think that even if we still need use animals for our own purpose in some way, we are suppose to try our best to protect them.
Also, unlike some aggressive activists, students dedicating on animal rights and animal welfare are very friendly. They have never hold protest. Instead, they influence other people by holding activities and events that can help animals. I believe it is a more efficient way to spread our advocation. I hope animal right and animal welfare can be aware by more people in the future.
