Lesson Plans

Before Starting...

In combining these areas of social justice and technology within the classroom, there are a few general points that you'll want to keep in mind to facilitate a better classroom culture. The following lesson plans already anticipate an educator that has covered these concerns within the classroom. If not, the educator should be advised to do so before bringing these pieces to their students.

Focus of empathy

One of the many positive that stems from incorporating social justice issues into class isn't just providing a space to discuss these problems. Instead, educators ought to remember to put some focus on their community actively listening to their classmates share stories. Students that do not have an extensive background in active listening may find developing this empathy difficult. Note that this is especially true depending on your own audience's age group; younger children greatly benefit from being regularly asked how they understand and make meaning, yet it can also be the most difficult group to work with. With that said, this emphasis on empathy is important for a variety of different students.

Recognize real impact

Because technology scarcity and inequity is as wide-stretch of an issue as it is, educators must consider how their practices-whether discussions, homework assignments, or class activities-could be accomplished by those that may experience the social justice concerns covered in class. Despite the following lesson plans usage of digital tools, this usage sparks conversation regarding the constraints and affordances of both analog and digital genres and brings the issue of technology inequity to the forefront of the class.

Classroom code of conduct

Most professors tend to include a section on "Classroom Etiquette" within their syllabus, but may skip over the section while going over their semester guidelines. This etiquette will be paramount as you may encounter students with varying-and strong-opinions that may or may not differ from your own. This is what I have used in my class; this excerpt straddles the line between inquiry and engaging in disruptive and demoralizing class behavior:

Part of this course will be engaging with a multitude of backgrounds, concepts, and ideologies. Therefore, I’m asking that you also come to class with an open mind. As we delve into arguments, respect for your peers must be of the utmost importance. This does not mean you are not allowed to ask questions or engage in criticism, but rather recognizing your potential audiences as well as the difference between curiosity and malice. I have zero tolerance for mocking, hostile, or discriminatory comments and behaviors.
Stick to this kind of a policy throughout your semester by being critical of your readings, classroom conversations, and students' pieces they compose.
