Greek life offers its members a way to become part of something bigger than themselves. Houses come together in order to support their philanthropic initiatives. Each organization has a charity that it sponsors, and massive amounts of effort go into the organization of events to fundraise in support of these charities. Philanthropy events are a way for ever chapter to support the initiatives of other chapters on campus. Chapters will organize events like volleyball games, football games, or even cake decorating competitions, and ask houses to sign up teams and compete against other houses. By signing up for events, chapters will donate to each other, creating a reciprocal system of charitable donations. It is also an amazing way to strengthen the Greek community on campus. You are not limited to only your chapter when you join Greek life, you become a part of the bigger community on campus, building friendships with people you otherwise may have never encountered. As well as supporting each other, Greek life also supports the initiatives of the University of Illinois. I am very proud to say that my sorority, Pi Beta Phi, was among the top three highest fundraising teams for Illinithon in 2017 and 2018. Chapters get involved in all aspects of student life, and this most definitely includes the charitable initiative of the University.
As college students, fundraising initiatives and charitable donations are the most direct way many members are able to make an impact. By joining Greek life students join one of the largest activist forces on our campus, and across the nation.
