Final Project: Students for Environmental Concerns
Beyond Coal
Beyond coal is a committee under SECS that focuses on issues related to the coal industry. They believe that the university should stop supporting the coal industry by ending the financial support of the industry. They have had protests and rally to voice their opinions on campus every semester. They have successfully pushed the university to promise to shut down the Abbott power plant and have been pushing the university to stop funding the coal industry. Students and faculty have all voted “yes” to divest the investment in the coal industry, yet the university has not actually taken action to do so. Therefore, the committee has been using different resources and methods to make sure that the university does that as soon as possible.
Below is a video clip of their protest on the Quad from 2016. It explains why the coal industry is no longer worth being supported. According to research, the stock value of coal industry has dropped 97% in the past four years. Investing in an industry that is no longer worth the value is not something students want, not to mention the industry has significantly negative effect on our living environment.
Coal industry is one of the major carbon emission sources that we have, and it is continuingly contributing to climate change. Some people still hope to revive the coal industry, and unfortunately, that includes the US government. There are plenty of options for renewable energy to provide electricity to the nation and coal is no longer the best option. Therefore, many activists are trying to let the public understand that, we should stop supporting the coal industry any forms.
