Student Activism: Students for Environmental Concerns

Sustainability

SECS puts a huge amount of effort in promoting more sustainable life styles and raising awareness on how we can change the way as consumers. They work with UIUC Red Bison to restore the ecological environment in central Illinois, and also co-hosted a plant sale on the Quad on April 19, 2018.

Sustainable Business EXPO was also held, so that more people can learn about businesses or local organizations around Champaign-Urbana that are operated in sustainable ways, including vegetarian restaurants, biking projects, etc. If the campus community understands that there are more sustainable life choices that they can make, many will be willing to reconsider when making decisions.

SECS also encourages vegetarianism and meat-free Monday. Meat production releases a huge amount of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, and carbon dioxide is the worst greenhouse gas that causes global warming. It’s not really an easy thing to go become a vegetarian, but by eating less meat or participating in meat-free Monday, we can contribute to reducing greenhouse gases step by step.

I am #meatfree because...
"meat is a huge drain of resources :( "
"individual choices are powerful! "
"meat isn’t necessary" "mass meat production is harming our future"
"climate change is real and methane is a huge contributor"
"better lifestyle for people, the earth, + the animals exist!"

SECS also has its annual clothing swap as a way to promote a more sustainable way to look nice! Fast fashion is a current trend that increases waste since most people don’t wear their clothes for that long before throwing it away or simply just stop wearing them. By giving your clothes to SECS, you can participate in the clothing swap and will be able to get some fashionable goods from other people. It is a great way to get rid of clothes that you no longer wear but are still in good condition and a great way to get new clothes without spending money!
