• plan the reader's journey.

Preparation

Like a guide needs to assess the skills and physical capabilities of those being guided,

• a writer needs to research the target audience.

Before a writer undertakes the Aggregation Challenge in The Checkered Fields, it would be useful to have information about:

• what the target audience (for a particular instance of writing) knows about the topic, and
• what things are valued by that target audience (in the context they are being written to)

Application

Having information about WHAT the target audience (of a particular instance of writing) knows and values will help a writer to:

• select information that will (metaphorically) motivate the target audience to achieve the desired consequence,
  and
• arrange that information effectively.
